Aftercare Tips for Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are one of the most effective treatments for addressing hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and uneven skin texture. However, the magic doesn't stop when you leave the studio — proper aftercare is crucial for achieving the best results and preventing complications.

1. Sun Protection is Non-Negotiable

After a peel, your skin is highly vulnerable to UV damage. Sun exposure can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, completely undoing the benefits of your treatment. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every single day, even if it's cloudy or you're staying indoors near a window.

2. Keep it Simple and Gentle

Put away your active ingredients. For at least 5–7 days post-peel, avoid the following:

  • Retinoids and vitamin A derivatives
  • AHAs and BHAs (glycolic, salicylic acid)
  • Physical scrubs or exfoliants

Stick to a gentle, hydrating cleanser and a rich, fragrance-free moisturizer to support your skin's barrier as it heals.

3. Do Not Pick or Peel

As your skin begins to shed, it can be tempting to help it along. Resist the urge. Pulling off flaking skin prematurely can cause scarring and permanent dark spots. Let the skin slough off naturally — the process is working as it should.

4. Stay Hydrated Inside and Out

Drink plenty of water and keep your skin moisturized consistently. A hydrated skin barrier heals faster and more efficiently. If your skin feels tight or dry, reapply your moisturizer — there's no such thing as over-moisturizing during recovery.
