How Long Does a Brazilian Wax Last? (+ Aftercare Tips)
It is the question I hear most often, usually while someone is still on the table: how long is this going to last? The honest answer is three to six weeks for most people, and where you land in that range depends on things you can partly control. Here is the full picture.
What Is a Brazilian Wax?
A Brazilian wax removes all the hair from the front, the back, and everything between. You can leave a strip or a triangle at the front if you prefer — it is your appointment, and nothing happens that you did not ask for. A bikini wax is the smaller version: it tidies the sides and the top, and leaves the rest.
I use hard wax for intimate areas. Hard wax grips the hair rather than the skin, so it lifts hair without pulling at the surface underneath. That single choice is the difference between an appointment you dread and one you book again.
How Long Does a Brazilian Wax Last?
Three to six weeks is the normal range. Two things drive it:
- Waxing pulls hair from the root. Shaving cuts it at the surface, which is why stubble is back in two days. Waxed hair has to grow the whole way out again.
- Your hairs are not on the same schedule. At any moment some follicles are actively growing and others are resting. A wax clears everything that is above the surface today, but the resting follicles catch up over the next couple of weeks. That is why you might see a few strays at week two even though the wax worked perfectly.
Skin stays visibly smooth for roughly two to three weeks. The stretch from three to six weeks is about how much regrowth you are personally willing to live with.
Factors That Affect How Long It Lasts
How often you wax
This is the big one. Repeated waxing on a regular cycle weakens the follicle over time. Hair comes back finer, softer, and patchier, and the gaps between appointments get longer on their own. Clients who have waxed with me for a year often go five or six weeks comfortably. Clients on their first or second appointment usually want to come back at three or four.
Whether you shave between appointments
Shaving resets the cycle. It cuts hair at the surface, so every follicle is starting from a different point again and the next wax has less to grip. If you can hold off, hold off — it makes the next appointment both more effective and more comfortable.
Hair growth rate, hormones, and genetics
Growth speed varies, and it changes with hormones. Pregnancy, birth control, PCOS, and thyroid conditions all shift how quickly hair comes back. None of this is a problem — it just means your ideal booking rhythm is yours, not the number on a chart.
Hair length at your appointment
About a quarter of an inch, or roughly two to three weeks of growth, is the sweet spot. Too short and the wax cannot grip. Much longer and the removal is more uncomfortable than it needs to be.
Brazilian Wax Aftercare Tips
Aftercare is the part that decides whether the next three weeks feel smooth or itchy. For the first 24 to 48 hours:
- Skip heat. No hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, or sunbeds. Freshly waxed follicles are open, and heat plus moisture invites irritation.
- Skip the gym. Friction and sweat are the two main causes of post-wax bumps. Give it a day.
- Wear cotton, and wear it loose. Tight synthetic fabric traps heat exactly where you do not want it.
- Leave it alone. No scrubs, no retinol, no acids, no fragranced lotion on the area.
From day three onward, switch to prevention:
- Exfoliate gently, two or three times a week. A soft washcloth or a mild chemical exfoliant keeps dead skin from trapping new hairs. This is the single best defence against ingrowns.
- Moisturize daily. Supple skin lets hair break through cleanly instead of curling back under.
- Do not pick at an ingrown. Warm compress, gentle exfoliation, patience. Picking turns a bump into a scar.
The same principles apply to every area I wax — there is more detail in my guide to waxing aftercare dos and don'ts.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
- Grow it out to about a quarter inch — two to three weeks since your last shave or wax.
- Exfoliate the day before, not the same day. Same-day scrubbing leaves skin sensitized.
- Shower beforehand and skip oils, lotions, and powders on the area.
- Time it around your cycle if you can. Skin is most sensitive in the few days before your period. A week after is the most comfortable window.
- Take an ibuprofen 30 minutes before if you are nervous or it is your first time. It genuinely helps.
And if it is your first Brazilian: you will be fine. It takes about 30 minutes, the worst of it is over in a few, and you will not be the most nervous person who has been on that table this week.
